Junction and Hub
The Municipality of Ullensaker is the home of Oslo Airport. It has approximately 35 000 inhabitants and is one of the fastest growing municipalities in Norway in terms of employment and population. Forecasts prepared by Statistics Norway predict significant future growth over the next 15 years with an average population growth of 2.5 % per year. The local government is committed, flexible, solution-oriented and have a positive attitude to commercial development.
The area which includes Oslo Airport City, Oslo Airport and the town of Jessheim is experiencing growing interest as well as substantial development of new commercial enterprises and residential construction. The airport, shops, hotels and transport facilities have replaced Norwegian Defence and agriculture as the primary employers in the area. Creating a distinct urban city structure with a strong focus on housing construction and associated services and infrastructures (shops, catering, recreation, kindergartens/schools etc.) supports Oslo Airport City’s vision and goals for development in Norway's fastest growing and most attractive region outside of Oslo.

2018 Gardermobyen (Jessheim, the Gardermoen commercial park and Oslo Airport) is already designated by the Municipality of Ullensaker as an area of special interest for increased urban and commercial development. The municipality currently has 35 000 inhabitants, of which 18 000 live in Jessheim. The area is a continuation of the municipal strategy, yet with a greater focus on Oslo Airport City. Eco-friendly and sustainable region
Political commitment and willingness are invaluable factors for further development of Oslo Airport City and Norway's largest transport hub.
The regional plan for land use and transportation for Oslo and Akershus was adopted by the Municipality of Oslo and by the County Municipality of Akershus in December 2015. This plan was pursued via the merger of several smaller counties into one large county (Viken fylke) as of 01.01.2020.
The plan is a direct consequence of a decision made by the Norwegian Parliament (Proposition to the Odelsting #10 2008/09) in which Oslo and Akershus were required to come up with a strategy to reach the goal of becoming a more competitive and sustainable region, in addition to reaching national targets for climate concerns and transport policies.
The Norwegian government is thus committed to pursuing the success of the plan together with the Municipality of Oslo, the County Municipality of Viken and all municipalities in Viken. The plan concludes in 2030, however, with a perspective towards 2050.
Regional cities with high growth
The Oslo region will be focusing on the principles of multicore urban development of liveable cities with the overall aim of improving the quality of life in and around Oslo. Reliable and efficient public transport solutions are considered a key element. Regional cities will ideally represent a high proportion (80-90 %) of the housing and workplace growth, and thereby play a more influential role in the region.
Jessheim is outlined as a regional city with high growth and with great capacity for further investments in urban and commercial development in line with increased activity at the airport. The area of Øvre Romerike already experiences a high frequency of commuting across the Gardermoen area. It is advisable to further increase this activity, in a way which encourages the use of public transport for commuting purposes. The public transport axis between Jessheim and Oslo Airport via Gardermoen Næringspark will be improved, and businesses with many employees must be located close to the axis.
The Municipality of Ullensaker implemented a new strategic plan in 2020 which sets the goals for further development of Gardermoen and Jessheim as a regional hub with an international standard and a local identity.

Oslo Airport City is ideally located in close proximity to the airport, the main roads, the future freight terminal and attractive residential areas in Jessheim. Furthermore, the connection times to downtown Oslo, regional Norway and Central Europe are short and convenient.
Norway's key regional cities including Bergen, Trondheim, Tromsø, Stavanger and Kristiansand are just a short journey from Oslo Airport City. Important industries in Norway are located in these areas, and the cities are developing in their own right. OAC will potentially be these regions’ firugrehead for the rest of the world to see, strengthening Norway's competitiveness abroad.

Scandinavia's second largest airport
Oslo Airport Gardermoen (OSL) is Norway's main airport and the country's most central and important hub. In addition to aviation services, OSL has airport hotels, conference facilities, shops, restaurants and other services, as well as over 20 000 parking spaces.
In 2018, OSL had approx. 29 million travellers, establishing it as the second largest airport in Scandinavia. Employment within the hotel-, restaurant- and retail sector has grown significantly from 2005 to 2016, from approx. 11 % to approx. 21% in and around the airport. Today, OSL employs approx. 12 500 people directly. Additionally, subsidiaries, contacts etc. are also essential local employers, adding up to a total of 23 000 people. This number is anticipated to double by 2050, which goes to show that the investments at the airport have made OSL in to one of the country's clearly biggest employers.
